2021: A Year of Hope

By December 16, 2021 December 20th, 2021 No Comments
For many, 2021 was a year of hope as the world emerged from many of the public health measures and social distancing of 2020. At Cerrell, we committed ourselves to improving our communities through new and transformative ways and sought to partner with organizations that are moving the needle of change.

Here are our staff’s top achievements of 2021:

Promoting COVID-19 vaccinations in communities of color throughout Southern California

As we entered 2021, the COVID-19 vaccine became available to the general public. Our longtime client, Providence, immediately focused on hosting vaccination clinics in communities where vaccine rates were lagging behind. We were proud to support Providence’s health equity work to improve access to health care and education for communities throughout Southern California.

We documented this work at one of several pop-up vaccine clinics and produced a video capturing the thoughts and feelings of members of the Lincoln Memorial Congregational Church in South LA as they receive a potentially life-saving vaccination.

Reducing the racial wealth gap and empowering Black communities across LA County

Our client LISC LA began 2021 with a vision: The Black Economic Development Agenda (BEDA), an initiative to focus resources and programs on closing the racial wealth gap and empowering Black communities across Los Angeles County. In its first year, $10 million was made available to support diverse small businesses, working families and community-based organizations that serve across South LA.

Cerrell was proud to partner with LISC LA to ensure that these targeted programs reach their intended audience and to expand LISC LA’s coalition of community partners for maximum impact. BEDA has strengthened Black-owned businesses through economic relief and business development, and empowered Black Angelenos through leadership development.

Driving equity in education

Our clients are the people and organizations working to improve, uplift and strengthen communities. Long Beach City College (LBCC) has long been a trailblazing institution in racial equity work – so much so that they were recently awarded a $30 million gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in recognition of their efforts. With events of the past year bringing racial justice to the forefront, we have been proud to support projects and clients committed to structural and institutional change and closing equity gaps in the region.

We worked with LBCC to create an annual strategic communications plan and video that highlights these efforts to prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion. The process of producing this video in partnership with their media team was incredibly rewarding for Cerrell staff, and we hope you find their efforts just as inspiring as we have!

Transforming LA's transportation infrastructure

Anyone who’s ever lived or worked in LA knows that you plan most of your life around traffic. This is especially true for those of us that have to traverse the Sepulveda Pass which connects the San Fernando Valley to West LA. But help could be on the way thanks to Cerrell client BYD and the LA SkyRail Express (LASRE) team. After years of educating stakeholders about the advances in monorail technology, LA Metro’s Board awarded LASRE one of two pre-development agreements for the development for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project.

We’re proud to be working on this once-in-a-generation project that could improve the region’s connectivity while reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.

Moments to brag about

Sometimes we like to toot our own horn. 2021 was full of memorable achievements for Cerrell. Here are just a few of them:

  • We won three PRSA-LA PRisms Awards for our work in 2020 to help deliver a public relations, community outreach and marketing campaign for LISC LA’s Regional COVID-19 Recovery Fund – which resulted in equitable distribution of more than $100M dollars in grants – and brought a much-needed wave of financial relief to LA’s small businesses. • Cerrell Vice President Amy Rosenfeld and Senior Account Executive Megan Kay were featured in O’Dwyer’s PR magazine’s October issue, highlighting how the PR industry can help cut through the politicization of healthcare and increase access to care for all. Read the full article here.
  • Chief Strategic Officer Brandon Stephenson and Public Affairs Director John Anderson hosted training webinars and presentations on effective communication in a virtual world to LA County Division of the California League of Cities and the Municipal Management Association of Southern California.
